Not reliably with an ordinary smartphone alone.
A phone camera can detect changes in blood flow at your fingertip using a technology called photoplethysmography, or PPG.
This can be useful for measurements such as pulse. ❤️
But converting those optical signals into accurate systolic and diastolic blood pressure is much more difficult.
And this is not merely a theoretical concern.
A validation study published in JAMA Internal Medicine tested a popular smartphone blood-pressure app and found that its measurements were highly inaccurate.
⚠️ Most concerningly, the researchers reported that approximately 77.5% of people who actually had hypertensive blood pressure would have been falsely reassured that their BP was not hypertensive.
Modern algorithms are considerably more sophisticated than they were when that study was conducted.
But the broader problem remains: the American Heart Association says cuffless technologies — including smartphone and wearable approaches — still require better validation before they should be relied upon for diagnosis or treatment decisions.

⌚ What about a blood pressure checker watch?
This is where things became considerably more confusing.
Apple introduced Hypertension Notifications on supported Apple Watch models. The feature analyzes optical heart-sensor data for patterns associated with possible hypertension.
That sounds similar to measuring blood pressure. [4]
But it isn’t.
Apple's own validation document states that the feature does not directly measure blood pressure and does not provide the user with a blood pressure reading.
Instead, if patterns suggest possible hypertension, Apple encourages the user to measure blood pressure using a third-party cuff over several days.
🚨 Remember this distinction:
Apple Watch detecting possible hypertension ≠ Apple Watch measuring your blood pressure.
The distinction matters.
The 2025 AHA/ACC High Blood Pressure Guideline specifically recommends avoiding reliance on cuffless devices, including smartwatches, for accurate BP measurements until they demonstrate greater precision and reliability.
Your Apple Watch can still be extremely useful for heart-health tracking. ❤️⌚
It can provide information about heart rate, activity, sleep and other cardiovascular signals, while supported features may alert you to patterns worth investigating.
But if you want to check your blood pressure reading, you still need an appropriate blood pressure measurement device.
❓ Can I check my blood pressure without a machine?
If by “without a machine” you mean without a cuff or another properly validated blood-pressure measurement device, the practical answer today is no.
Blood pressure isn't the same as pulse.
📱 Your phone can detect your pulse through its camera.
⌚ A smartwatch can continuously monitor heart rate.
But neither measurement automatically tells you the pressure exerted by circulating blood on your artery walls.
You can, of course, have your BP checked at a doctor's office, pharmacy or health clinic without owning a monitor yourself.
But a blood pressure measurement device is still being used.
The FDA reinforced this distinction in a September 2025 safety communication warning consumers against unauthorized devices that claim to measure or estimate blood pressure.

For most home users, start with this simple rule:

The American Heart Association recommends an automatic cuff-style upper-arm monitor for home blood pressure measurement.
It also advises choosing a monitor that has been independently validated and ensuring that the cuff correctly fits your arm.
Rather than choosing purely by brand, price or the number of stars on Amazon, check whether the specific model has been validated.

🎯 What are the most accurate blood pressure checkers?
There isn't one single blood pressure checker that is automatically most accurate for everybody.
For most people, accuracy depends on three things:

A very expensive monitor used incorrectly can give you a worse reading than a relatively simple validated monitor used properly.
That is why “validated upper-arm monitor with a correctly sized cuff” is usually a more useful buying criterion than simply looking for the most expensive or technologically advanced blood pressure checker.
⌚ Blood pressure checker wrist vs upper-arm monitor
A blood pressure checker wrist monitor is not necessarily the same thing as a smartwatch.
Some wrist blood pressure monitors contain an actual inflatable cuff around the wrist and have been clinically validated.
These can provide genuine blood pressure measurements.
However, the American Heart Association generally recommends an upper-arm monitor because wrist measurements can be more sensitive to positioning and therefore less reliable.
Validated wrist monitors can still be useful when an upper-arm cuff is unsuitable — for example, when someone's arm size or another physical issue makes an appropriate upper-arm measurement difficult.
📍 When using one, the wrist normally needs to be positioned correctly at heart level.
The key difference:
Wrist cuff = measures pressure using a cuff.
Smartwatch = generally uses optical and other sensors to analyze cardiovascular signals.
Don't confuse the two.

Once you have a validated monitor, technique matters almost as much as the device.
The American Heart Association recommends:
☕ Avoid smoking, caffeine and exercise for about 30 minutes before measuring.
🚻 Empty your bladder before taking the reading.
🪑 Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes.
🦶 Keep your back supported and your feet flat on the floor.
💪 Place the cuff on bare skin, not over clothing.

A single measurement is only a snapshot.
